Milling the cross slide casting and checking the depth for the gib mounts pn the
finished cross slide ready for me to make the gib hardware. |

Because I had some problems trying to ram the mold for the cross slide I decided
to do it and the ram pattern as a match plate. Here is one of the castings.
The cross slide is fine but had to make another casting of just the ram |
After fly cutting the bottom and top of the ram ,and cleaning up the casting I mounted
it in the lathe and faced the outer edge of the ram head. I mounted
the ram in the 4 jaw chuck and centered on the pivot point on the ram head. With
a little creative positoning of the toolpost I was just able to turn the casting. |
A little more playing with tool post positon and facing the outside of the ram head
was fairly easy. The hard part was facing the inside of the ram head without
hitting the ram body. I had to stop the lathe, move the tool all the
way in and then face moving from the inside to outside diamater. |
Nearly finished ram casting and the parts so far. It is starting to look something
like a shaper. More to come ! |
