Hand operated Metal Shaper |
this is a small metal shaper based somewhat on the Adept #2 It is built using the same method as the Gingery home metal shop projects Using cast Aluminum for the base and cold roll steel for the boxways this project is in the very early stages of construction. I will try to keep this site updated, and will also provide updates on the Metal_shaper group on Yahoo groups http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Metal_Shapers/ |

the Adept #2 hand shaper that this project is modeled after. Below is the pattern
for the base casting |
Front and back pictures of the casting as it was taken from the sand. |
I cleaned up the casting and attempted to use a fly cutter to finish the top and
front surface in the mill. Because of the shape and size I could not mount
it securly enough. This caused some digging of the tool on the casting.
I filled the bad spots with "jb weld" and decided to try to grind the surface.
By mounting a reinforced grinding disk in the mill I was able
to get large enough coverage to finish both the top and front, I also used the
same method to clean up the steel plate I will use for the top way. |

Here is what it looks like after surface grinding the base casting and the top way.
